Montallat River Overflows, Hundreds of Flooded Houses Flooded in North Barito

Heavy rain that flushed Central Kalimantan Province resulted in flood in North Barito District on August 9. 2017. Flood happened due to the overflowing of the Montallat River (Barito river). Hundreds of houses in Tongka Village, Gunung Timang Sub-district, North Barito District, Central Kalimantan, were submerged by floods caused by the overflowing of the Montallat River which was washed down by heavy rain on Tuesday night.

As a result of this incident, 1 unit of village office, 2 units of house of worship, and 1 unit of elementary school was submerged. A total of 189 households / ± 150 houses were flooded with a water level of 1-2 meters. A total of ± 19 families (76 people) evacuated to the mountain. Road access to location was cut off.

Tongka village became the worst affected village. Because in this village the water level reaches 1-2 meters. Residents immediately evacuated to safe place. In addition to Tongka Village floods also soaked a number of other villages, but it wasn’t flood the houses, water level in this place about 20 centimeters to 0.5 meters.

The height of the water in the upper reaches of the Montallat River is still high, residents are prohibited to return to their home. Currently related agencies are still arriving to provide assistance and evacuate residents.
